History of Lampworking
Lampworking is a very old art. The manufacture
of glass goes back prior to 1700 BC in Syria. Glass beads have been
found in excavations dating back as far as 2450 BC.
Today, we think of lampworking as glassblowing. But
the term Lampworking was coined during the time when small amounts of
glass were worked over oil and wax lamps.
Pen and ink drawings, from the 1700's, exist depicting
the tools and benches used by early craftsmen. Air was piped to the
flame from bellows in some cases that were operated by foot. In some
cases it was mouth blown to increase the intensity of the flame.
In our modern Studios we use torches to do what our
forefathers accomplished with oil lamps. The history of glass is fascinating
and just a mystical as the glass itself.
